Babylon, a city-state in ancient Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) is in ruins lying at Al Hillah in Babil Province of Iraq, 85 kilometers south of Baghdad. All that remains of the ancient famed city of Babylon is a mound of broken mud-brick buildings and debris.

Time has eroded the mud-brick structures of ancient Babylon, the city of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar. The "holy city" of Babylonia was the seat of the Neo-Babylonian Empire from 612 BCE. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was here where Daniel read the writing on the wall and Alexander the Great died.

. The ruined city was restructured by Iraqi authorities to conserve the earth holding fragments of biblical-era civilization. The provincial government has seized control of much of Babylon and opened a park on a Euphrates tributary that draws visitors by the busload.
